After qualifying in medicine from Glasgow, he had several training posts in his native city, culminating in hisMD thesis in 1997 on the pharmacology andmechanismsof actionof the new antiepileptic drugs. He had a six-year spell in Liverpool’s Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery training in neurology and clinical neurophysiology. In 2002 he took up a post as a Consultant Neurologist covering epilepsy services in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Glasgow. His clinical workload covers clinics dealing with established and newly diagnosed epilepsy as well as patients presenting with a first seizure. Prof. JP has written one textbook and several book chapters including being lead author for David son’s Principles and Practice of Medicine. He is past-President of the UK Chapter of the International League Against Epilepsy and until 2019 was an elected Council Member for the Association of British Neurologists. Prof. John Paul Leach Professor of Clinical Neurology Honorary Consultant Neurologist Head of Undergraduate Medicine University of Glasgow, Scotland, UK ABOUTOUR EXPERT SPEAKERS Dr. Maria Oto is a Consultant Neuropsychiatrist and the Lead Clinician currently working at the Scottish Epilepsy Centre in Glasgow, which is the only residential centre for the assessment and management of Epilepsy in Scotland. A third of the patients referred to the centre have a learning disability. Dr. Oto has been working in the field of epilepsy for most of her career; initially at the Institute of Neurology in Glasgow and thereafter at the Scottish Epilepsy Centre. Since 2014, Dr. Oto has also been part of the multi-disciplinary team based at the West of Scotland Regional Epilepsy Surgery Program as well as leading the UK network of neuro psychiatrists involved in epilepsy surgery programs. Over the years, Dr. Oto has been involved with research and published widely. In 2010 she completed a PhD on the diagnosis and management of psychogenic nonepileptic seizures which is one of her main research interests. After graduating from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine between 1983-1989, he completed his neurology specialization training in the Neurology Department of Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine between 1990-1995. M.Zülküf Önal, who received the title of specialist in 1995 and Associate Professor in 2000, received the title of Professor in the Department of Neurology, Faculty of Medicine, Ufuk University in 2007. Then he worked for three years in basic neurophysiological research, mainly doing patch-clamp recordings (at Baylor College, Houston, inMontpelli er and in Munich), before he moved to the Department of Neurol ogy at the University and the German Centre for Vertigo and Balance Disorders at the University of Munich, Germany. His particular area of interest is the therapy of vestibular, ocular motor and cerebellar disorders. Some of hismajor achievements are: First, demonstration of the effectiveness of vestibular exercis es in acute vestibular neuritis in a controlled clinical trial. Second, the benefit of steroids in acute vestibu lar neuritis, a placebo-controlled, four-arm trial published in the NEJM. Third, introduction of three new therapeutic principles: aminopyridines, as potassium channel blockers, for the treatment of down - beat, upbeat and central positioning nystagmus as well as episodic ataxia type 2; chlorzoxazone for the therapy of downbeat nystagmus; and, more recently, acetyl-DL-leucine for the treat ment of certain ataxiasm namely Niemann-Pick Type C. Fourth, the development of new light and practical examina - tion glasses for nystagmus: the “M glasses” and the “positional vertigo App”. He has been the princi - pal investigator of eleven clinical trials. He is also verymuch engaged in the “International Classifica - tion of Vestibular Disorders”.
