Dr. Alfonso Fasano holds the Chair in Neuromodulation and Multi-Disciplinary Care at the University of Toronto and University Health Network. He is a Professor in the Department of Medicine (Division of Neurology) at the University of Toronto. He is staff neurologist and co-director of the Surgical Program for Movement Disorders at Toronto Western Hospital, University Health Network. He is also staff neurologist at the Hospital of Sick Children in Toronto. Dr. Fasano is a Clinician Investigator at the Krembil Research Institute and Affiliate Scientist at KITE Research Institute – Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. Dr. Fasano leads the Core E (closed-loop capabilities) of the CenteR for Advancing Neurotechnological Innovation to Application (CRANIA) and serves on the scientific advisory board of the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation and International Essential Tremor Foundation. He is the chair of the Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus study group of and member of the study group on tremor of the International Parkinson Movement Disorders Society; he is also a member of the Tremor Research Group and the Parkinson Study Group.
Dr. Fasano received his medical degree from the Catholic University of Rome, Italy, in 2002 and became a neurologist in 2007. After a two-year fellowship at the University of Kiel, Germany, he completed a PhD in neuroscience at the Catholic University of Rome. His main areas of interest are the treatment of movement disorders with advanced technology (infusion pumps and neuromodulation), pathophysiology, and treatment of tremor and gait disorders. He has authored more than 300 scientific papers and book chapters. Dr. Fasano is the co-editor of the section “Gaps and Controversies” of Movement Disorders Journal and an editorial board member of Annals of Neurology, Movement Disorders Journal, Movement Disorders Clinical Practice and Parkinsonism and Related Disorders. Dr. Gottschalk received his MD from the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed residency at the Neurological Institute of NY. He was then a research fellow at the Substance Abuse Research Center of the New York State Psychiatric Institute studying the neurobiology of cocaine abuse using functional brain imaging. He began his career in Headache Medicine as a fellow of the Montefiore Headache Unit, training under Drs. Richard Lipton, Seymour Solomon, and Lawrence Newman. After full-time clinical practice as a General Neurologist from 2001-2009, he returned to Yale as full-time clinical faculty in Neurology. He was UCNS board-certified in Headache Medicine in 2012 and was made Fellow, AHS, in 2014.
Dr. Gottschalk is currently director of the Yale Headache & Facial Pain program and Chief of the section of General Neurology. This program provides training to medical students and residents in Neurology as well as Primary Care. As Director of the Headache Medicine fellowship program he supervises trainees who have chosen a career in this field. He is active in curriculum development at the American Headache Society (AHS), working to establish milestones for Headache Medicine knowledge and practice over the full range of medical education programs. He is a member of the AHS Ethics Committee and of the UCNS Certification Exam Liaison Committee.
In 2020, Dr. Gottschalk was elected President of the Alliance for Headache Disorders Advocacy (AHDA), an organization that lobbies Congress to address barriers to appropriate care and funding for research of headache disorders. Given that migraine is the #1 cause of disability in women age 19-49 and the second leading cause of disability of all disorders worldwide, the lack of funding for training in this field and research into new remedies should be considered a public health emergency.

Before joining ACPN, Dr. Alsaadi was the Chief of the Neurology Department at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City for 11 years. He previously held a position as an Associate Professor of Neurology and the Director of the Adult Epilepsy Program and the Clinical Research Program at the University of California Davis. His research has focused on conducting drug study trials for new antiepileptic drugs for patients with epilepsy, quality of life in patients with epileptic and non-epileptic disorders, migraine headaches, multiple sclerosis, and neuropsychiatric comorbidities. Dr. Alsaadi has been honored with several prestigious awards for his work in the field of epilepsy. He has served on the Advisory Board of the Northern California Epilepsy Foundation and the membership committee of the American Epilepsy Society.
